Government To Regulate Foreign Traders
The government has assured local traders that it will act firmly to regulate the activities of foreign traders who fail to comply with the Investment Code of 1994 and other regulations guiding the retail trade.
The Minister of Trade, Industry, Private Sector Development and President Special Initiatives, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, gave the assurance at a meeting with the executive of the Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) in Accra last Wednesday.
A statement issued by the ministry said Papa Owusu-Ankomah urged the members of GUTA not to take the law into their own hands but instead collaborate with the government in finding a more lasting solution to the problem.
He said the government had almost concluded the revision of the Investment Code, which would now include higher investment thresholds and more stringent enforceable sanctions to regulate the activities of foreigners in retail trading.
Papa Owusu-Ankomah underlined the government commitment to improving efficiency and fair competition in domestic trade, adding that a comprehensive nation-wide programme to improve the physical condition under which traders operated in the markets under the Domestic Trade and Industrial Services Improvement Project had commenced.
Recently, some petty traders were reported to have locked up shops belonging to foreign traders but the leadership of GUTA denied sanctioning the action.
The executive agreed to furnish the minister with a list of companies which were alleged to have breached the Investment Code for investigations and appropriate sanctions. |
