Letting Love Find A Way Jeph Howard Chapter One -
“come on demi, please?” begged joel. “no.” “whyyy?” “because i don’t like star wars…” i replied for what seemed to be the millionth time. “but it’s a star wars convention and i got a new darth vader costuuummee!” “i. hate. star. wars.” i growled at my desperate, severely immature boyfriend. “but…but…” “seriously joel, you are acting like you are three years old. my 7 year old son is more mature than you are.” “fine.” joel pouted, storming off. i wasn’t really sure how i got into a relationship with such a pathetic excuse for a man. he was charming in the beginning; but now he just gets on my nerves.
my relationship with joel began nearly a year and a half ago; ask joel that, and you would probably get a different response. he doesn’t remember my birthday or our anniversary. he is completely self centered. we had met at a bar in my current hometown of albany, new york. joel is a fitness and image freak. i don’t have a problem with a man that likes to stay clean cut and fit, but it was to the point where it was just ridiculous. he hates it when i touch his hair or tug on his shirt; he gets a tan every other week, and he carries a comb in his pocket at all times. joel was definitely not my type. not to mention, he was controlling at times.
i walked into the living room where my son and only child jacoby sat with his acoustic guitar. “mom, can we go to the music store? the fourth string on my guitar broke.” “sure, i wanted to go to the mall anyways. this house is beginning to drive me crazy.” “okay. we can hang out! ….just you and me are going, right?” “yes honey, it’s just us. joel is annoying me about that damn star wars convention he wants to go to.” “star wars sucks.” jacoby stated, standing up. “i concur. i will meet you out by the car.” i told him, walking to the kitchen to get my keys. “okay, i’m going to run to my room and grab this cd i bought with my allowance. you have to hear this band.“ i double checked i had my wallet and cell phone before heading out the door. i climbed into my brand new 2006 cadillac escalade and stuck the key into the ignition. as i was pulling out of the driveway and driving down the road, jacoby put in his cd. “i think you will love this band.” he stated, pushing the disc into the slot. “what band is it?” “they are called ‘the used’. they are super good. one of my favorite bands.” he turned the volume up and i heard a man’s voice beginning to talk. “life’s greatest questions have always been; ‘who am i? where did i come from? why am i here? where am i going? you are about to see and hear one of the most significant messages given to us from god.” the music began playing while a man’s voice began singing soon after. i was instantly in love with it.
by the time we arrived at the mall, we had heard around 5 or 6 songs. i made a mental note to pick up the rest of their cds while at the music store. throughout the ride i asked about the members, where they were from, along with a few random questions.
i parked my pearl white suv and locked the doors and walked into the large two story building. “where to first, champ?” i asked ruffling my 7 year old’s auburn brown hair. “i’m hungry, can we go to the food court first?” “sure thing. remember to stay close to me.” “i know mom, you remind me just about every time we leave the house.” “we live in a very busy city, i’m not going to risk losing you to anybody.” “i know.” we walked to the food court after a short escalator ride to the second floor. “what do you feel like eating, jacoby?” “i feel like japanese food today.” “as do i.” we walked over to ‘little tokyo’ and stood in line behind a very tattooed man with black hair. “when we get home and i put my new string in my guitar, do you want to hear the song i have been learning to play?” “i sure do. you are getting very good at the guitar. i’ve been meaning to ask, how do you like your new guitar lesson teacher?” “he’s nice. i like him a lot better than the last guy. i’m glad he stopped teaching guitar. i learn a lot more from jared.” “that’s good. i thought he was nice when i met him.”
‘bzzzt’ my phone told me. i pulled it out my pocket. ‘new text message from joel’ it read. i sighed and flipped my phone open. “what da hell is ur problem?” the text read. “what are you talking about?” i replied. i shut my phone and stepped up to order my food. i got teriyaki chicken and green tea, jacoby got the same. i paid for our orders and scanned the tables for empty seats. the only table with two empty chairs currently had the tattooed man sitting in a third. i walked over to his table “hey, everywhere else is full…do you mind?” “not at all.” the man said politely. i got a good look at his face. he was attractive. he had brown eyes and two snakebite piercings below his bottom lip. he smiled warmly at us as we sat down. “hey, you’re the bass player in the used!” jacoby exclaimed. “you’re a fan?” the tattooed man questioned, raising an eyebrow. “oh yes. i had my mom listen to your ‘in love and death’ cd on the way here.” “and what did you think?” he asked turning to me. “i loved it. i’m going to buy my own copy while we are here.” “oh, that’s awesome! i’m happy to hear you love it. i’m jeph by the way.” he stated, sticking his hand out for me to shake. “demitra; but you can just call me demi.” “demi…i like it. very unique.” “thank you. this is my son, jacoby.” “nice to meet you, jacoby.” “you too. hey, are you here by yourself?” “yes and no, bert, quinn, and dan are over at the movie theater. i didn’t feel like going with them so i just came here.” “oh, well you should hang out with us! …is that okay, mom?” “i suppose. you seem very nice, jeph.” “i am.” he confirmed with a smile.
‘bzzzt’ i flipped open my phone. “y did u just leave? u can’t just leave like dat. u are being immature. u need to act like my girlfriend. come home.” i growled at my phone. “do not tell me what to do. i have put up with your needy ass for the last year. i’m fucking done. when i get home, you and your stuff better be gone or i am calling the cops. i don’t deserve to be treated the way you treat me.” i texted back, shutting my phone and slamming it onto the table with more force than necessary. “you okay?” jeph asked with a raised eyebrow. “no, my boyfriend is an asshole. he is always bossing me around like i am five.” “i’m sorry. you seem like a nice person. you deserve to be treated better than that.” “i know. i just broke up with him. i’m done with his attitude. we never really had a relationship to begin with. i felt more like his slave; or his mother. i always have.” “well then it is good you broke up with him.” i looked up at him. he had a very amused expression in his eyes. “what?” i fired. “you’re really pretty.” i felt the color drain, and then flush back a deep red in my face. “uhhh…” “sorry if i embarrassed you…but you did ask.” “i’m not embarrassed. i just didn’t expect it.” i looked over at jacoby. he was trying to act like he wasn’t paying attention. i rolled my eyes and looked back at jeph. “well thank you for the compliment. i haven’t had a real compliment for awhile.” “i compliment you mom.” “i know kiddo, i meant from another grown up.” “oh.” he went back to eating his lunch. i looked over to the left and watched some random guy throwing away a wrapper of a sort. i looked back to my plate. i didn’t realize i had finished my lunch already.
‘bzzzt’ i took a deep breath before i picked up my phone. “whateva bitch. i can find somebody worth my time. u just make me angry all da time.” “i could say the same to you.” i snickered to myself. “well i’m done, so whenever you two are ready.” jeph said picking up and sipping out of his starbucks coffee cup of what appeared to be green tea. “i’m done too.” i looked over to jacoby. “i’m done.” the three of us stood up and disposed of our garbage. “where to, miss demi?” jeph asked, rocking back and forth on his feet. “well the main reason we came to the mall was to get jacoby here a new string for his guitar.” “okay. music store it is.” as we walked to our destination, jeph started asking random questions. “how old are you two?” “i am 26 and my son here is 7.” “woah, i expected jacoby to be a little older than that.” “a lot of people do. he has an iq of 143 which is classified as superior intelligence. “awesome!” jeph exclaimed. “he is a straight a student. i am very proud of him.” “i bet so. that’s definitely something to be proud of.” “what about you jeph, how old are you?” “funny you should ask, i’m 26 as well.” “fantastic. when is your birthday?” “january 4th. yours?” “jacoby and i share a birthday; june 26th.” “that’s crazy, lunettes carrera pas cher, but awesome.” “indeed. so what brings you to new york?” “we have a show to do out here in around two weeks. we decided to come out early so we could just do whatever for a little while. we just started working on our new album. so we just have a few random shows here and there. our next show after this new york one isn’t for a couple of months though.” “oh, awesome.” “wait, your doing a show out here? mom! will you take me?,lunettes carrera! please?!” jacoby begged. i chuckled “we will have to see.” “okay.”
‘bzzzt’ i pulled my phone out of my jacket pocket. “i h8 u. u neva care bout what i want.” “that’s because everything is always about you. please, learn how to spell. you are reminding me of an unintelligent monkey.” i flipped my phone closed and slid it back into my pocket. we walked into the store and jeph started telling jacoby the pros and cons of different brands of strings. i ventured a few feet to the left to the posters. i mindlessly started flipping through them. i came across a ‘the used’ poster. i looked at all their faces, until i recognized jeph in the group of four. i smiled to myself. he was extremely attractive. i was already falling in love with his smile.
i finished with the posters and jeph showed me where the his bands albums were. i smiled when i learned there was another cd. i held onto both of them and playfully pushed jeph with my hip, earning me a poke in the side of my face. i giggled and walked over to where jacoby was looking at a few cds. “find any you want?” “am i allowed to get one?” “you’re a good kid. you can get a few if you want.” “really?” “sure.” i smiled at him, ruffling his shaggy hair. i looked over at jeph who was looking at a 69 eyes cd. he must have noticed me out of the corner of his eye because he suddenly looked at me and grinned. my face flushed and i looked away suddenly. i walked around the aisle of cds where i would be opposite of jeph. i picked up the first cd i saw. “marco…” i said, looking at the cd. “pollo.” i heard from the other side. i looked up and jeph was standing on his tippy toes, looking at me. jacoby was standing next to him, giggling. i put the cd down, and picked up another. it was a him cd. i didn’t have the album i held in my hand. i decided i would get it. i could spoil myself once in awhile, right? besides, him was one of my very favorite bands.
after we checked out of the store, jeph immediately asked what i wanted to do now. “no, you pick where we go now.” “hmmm…how about we go over to hot topic?” “yes, lunette de soleil carrera!” jacoby exclaimed. i rolled my eyes at his silly expression. “okay. let’s go.” as soon as we walked in the door, jacoby was off to the band shirt section. “oh my god! it’s jeph howard!” a random teenage girl exclaimed. jeph chuckled. “that’s me!” he responded. “can i get your autograph?” “sure thing. i don’t have a pen though.” “i have one in my pocket.” the girl said, pulling it out. she had black hair with bright blue and pink streaks in it. she had a nose piercing and green eyes. she looked to be around 15 or 16. jeph signed a paper she had held out to him and surprised me by trying to flirt with him. yeah, he is cute, but he is much to old for her. i rolled my eyes and looked at the current harry potter display they had at the front of the store. “so…do you wanna hang out?” i heard the girl ask coyly. “uh, no thanks. i’m sort of already hanging out with somebody.” he responded, motioning towards me. i turned towards him and just gave him a goofy stare before throwing a stuffed hedwig owl at him. he chuckled, picking it off of the floor. “oh, okay. well, can i get your number?” she asked. “i’d rather you didn’t…your like, 13...” “16 actually.” “sorry, still no. i have to go.” he said walking away from her. the girl left the store with a disappointed look on her face. “i hate being hit on by girls so much younger than me. it’s disgusting. i’m way to old for them and i could go to jail for it…but none of them seem to care about that.” “does it happen a lot?” “at least 4 to 5 girls, each of us, each city.” “oh. hey, what do you think of this shirt?” i held up a shirt i had found. “i like it.” “i do too. i don’t know if i should buy it though.” “do it. it would look good on you.” “thanks.” i smiled at him. “mom! can i get this? can i get this pleeeeaaaase?” jacoby asked, coming out of literally nowhere. he held up a ‘my chemical romance’ band shirt. “what do you think this is? your birthday?” i joked. “…we could pretend it is…” “i guess your right. we could. i guess you can get it; but that’s it, okay?” “okay mom. i’m going to go look around a little more.” “alright.” he walked over to all the random trinkets they have in a corner of the store. jeph noticed a shirt over on a wall and walked to it. he picked out his size and grinned hugely before hugging it. i walked over to him and took it from him. i put it up against him and nodded my head. “it suits you.” “i’m getting it. i love zelda.” i laughed “i do too!” i exclaimed. “fantastic.” he grinned again. “so, i never asked, what do you do for a living?” “i’m a trauma surgeon in the albany er room.” “oh, that sounds fascinating.” “i suppose. i love my job, but you have to always be quick on your feet. i’m almost always on call and my job is extremely stressful.” “i bet so. but it’s good you love your job then.” “well, lunette de soleil carrera, i’d prefer to do something else with my life, but i had to choose the career path that paid more to support my son.” “what did you originally want to do with your life?” “i’d like to be a tv producer.” “that sounds fun.” “i know it does. it was my first choice as a career. becoming a surgeon was my second. but, my son comes first.” “totally understandable. wait, aren’t most surgeons in their 30s or older? “yeah, usually. but i had amazing grades in school. i skipped my freshman year of high school and took mostly medical and media classes. i had jacoby the year after i graduated, so i had to be able to support him. i had no choice. i started working in the hospital as a paid intern. now i’m a full time qualified surgeon.” “awesome.” “yeah. i just wish i had more free time. i’ve been planning on quitting my job and moving to santa barbara.” jeph looked at me. “that’s far away.” “i know, but i need to get out of new york. this place is too crazy for me.”
‘bzzzt bzzzt bzzzt’ i groaned. i pulled my pager out of my pocket. “need you to come in asap.” it read. i looked up at jeph. “i’m so sorry…i have to go into work…on my day off…” “that’s okay.” i walked over to pay for the items jacoby and i had picked out. i walked over to jeph. “it was so good to meet you jeph. maybe i will see you around?” “definitely.” he flashed that smile i have already grown to love. “bye jacoby, bye demi…” he paused after my name. i smiled and started walking away before saying “bye.”
i climbed into my car and smiled to myself. could i already be crushing on somebody i just met? yes. yes i could. joel and i were never meant to be. i had accepted that months ago. our breakup didn’t phase me in the least. it was as if we were never dating. i pulled the car into reverse and backed out of the parking spot with care. i had handed my phone to jacoby who was calling my best friend to see if he could go over there until my shift ended. suddenly, a thought hit me. we never exchanged numbers. |
